An Approach to Modelling Legacy Enterprise Systems

چکیده
The reclamation and redevelopment of software "brownfield sites" requires a multi-layered understanding of the domain in which the enterprise system lives. A further dimension is added to the interconnectivity of the domain knowledge when the evolution of the system requires the migration of existing services to a web-based system and the creation of new value-added services. Where the enterprise systems are both internal to the organisations and "joined up" into wider interorganisational networks, there are further challenges to developers. The Institutionally Secure Integrated Data Environment (INSIDE) project is addressing the problems and issues surrounding the development and delivery of web based services for joined up systems within Higher Education (HE) Institutions. The project is working with a variety of legacy systems including the existing information systems, e.g. student record systems and virtual learning environments, at two universities. Initially a common business process, the registration of new undergraduate students, was analysed and modelled at both sites. The analysis and modelling of what was believed to be a simple and common process has provided the first attempt at the reclamation of knowledge within a brownfield site: the domain vocabulary; the existing business processes; associated information bases and legacy systems. Through trial and refinement, the project has developed an approach to analysis and modelling using some of the UML notations preceded by the development of a common abstracted vocabulary in the form of a Thesaurus. Having worked through the process of developing an initial and formal domain model of the registration process, it became clear that our experiences could be abstracted in the form of a meta-process that would provide guidance to other analysts and designers working in the area of brownfield site evolution and using UML. In this paper we define the meta-process that has emerged as a way to support incremental implementation of value-added services. This definition includes identification of the relationships that exist amongst the generated work products in context with the metaprocess.

Providing an Enterprise Architecture Framework Model for Laboratory Information Management Systems by Service Oriented Approach
Background and Aim: Laboratories are one of the most important scientific and research centers. Laboratory information management systems provide a platform for recording the information and collaborating between researchers. The main purpose of this study was suggesting an organizational architecture model of laboratory information management systems. Materials and Methods: This study was a ...
متن کاملTop-Down Enterprise Application Integration with Reference Model
For Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems such as SAP R/3 or IBM SanFrancisco, the tailoring of reference models for customizing the ERP systems to specific organizational contexts is an established approach. In this paper, we present a methodology that uses such reference models as a starting point for a top-down integration of enterprise applications. The re-engineered models of legacy s...
متن کاملAligning Legacy Information Systems to Business Processes
Recent years have experienced a growth in demand for re-engineering legacy information systems. The complexity of a development endeavour leading to migration of a legacy system stresses the need for a systematic supporting approach. We argue in this paper that such an approach should facilitate (a) documentation of dependencies between business processes and supporting IS in a way that changes...
متن کاملEnterprise Knowledge Management and Conceptual Modelling
Turbulence is in the nature of business environments. Changes brought about because of different requirements such as social, political, technical and economic, exert pressures on organisations to respond in a timely and cost effective way to these challenges. In such an unstable environment information system developers are challenged to develop systems that can meet the requirements of modern...
متن کاملWeb-Service Framework for Business Process Modelling & Legacy Systems Integration
In today's business climate, the need to be flexible, agile and highly responsive to market changes is leading many enterprises to rely increasingly on novel Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Any change to business models & business processes should be supported by the rules on how the business is put together, and by the corresponding ability of the underlying IT infrastructure...
